Many Muslims seek ways to improve their lives through both diligent effort and sincere prayer. When it comes to enhancing memory and overcoming forgetfulness, a powerful approach combines mental exercises with heartfelt dua (supplication) to Allah. This article explores a specific dua recommended for strengthening memory, rooted in prophetic tradition.

A Special Dua for Memory Enhancement

While some aspects of the chain of narration are debated, a significant account from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates the following: Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) approached the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) expressing his difficulty in retaining the Quran. He said, “My uncle and aunt be sacrificed for you! This Quran is slipping out of my memory. I don’t see myself having the ability to memorize it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded with a profound practice.

“O Abu al-Hasan! Should I teach you words by which Allah will benefit you, and whoever you teach will also benefit from them, and they will fix what is in your chest?” Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, teach me!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then instructed: “If you can rise during the last third of the night on Friday nights, then rise. For that is a witnessed time [when angels are present], and supplication at that time is accepted.”

(Quran 12:98 – Yusuf (Joseph))

“If you cannot rise during that time, rise in the middle of the night. If you cannot do that, rise early in the night. Perform four rak’ahs [prayers]. In the first rak’ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Yasin. In the second rak’ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Hamid (Ad-Dukhan). In the third rak’ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Iflam (Secdah). In the fourth rak’ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Tabaraka al-Mufassal (Al-MulK).”

“After the tashahhud [declaration of faith], praise Allah and send blessings upon me and other prophets. Ask for forgiveness for the believing men and women who have come before you.”

The Memory Dua in Arabic

Then recite this dua:

"Allahumma irhamni bi-tark al-ma'asi abadan ma abqaytani, warhamni an atakallafa ma la ya'niy, warzuqni husna annathari fima yuridika anni. Allahumma badee' as-samawati wal ardha, dha jalali wa ikrami wal 'izzati allati la turamu, as'aluka ya Allahu ya Rahman bi jalalika wa noori wajhike an tulzima qalbi hifza kitabika kama 'allamtani warzuqni an atlutahu ala annahwi alladhi yurdiya anni. Allahumma badee' as-samawati wal ardha, dha jalali wa ikrami wal 'izzati allati la turamu, as'aluka ya Allahu ya Rahman bi jalalika wa noori wajhike an tunawwira bikitabika basari wa an tutliqa bihi lisaani wa an tufrija bihi an qalbi wa an tashraha bihi sadri wa an taghsila bihi badani. Innahu la yu'inuni ala al-haqqi ghayruka wala yutihi illa anta wala hawla wa la quwwata illa billahi al-'aliyyil 'azeem."

Meaning of the Memory Dua

“O Allah! Have mercy on me by leaving off sins forever as long as You keep me alive. Have mercy on me so that I do not undertake what does not concern me, and grant me a good view in whatever pleases you from me. O Creator of the heavens and the earth! O Allah! O Most Merciful! By Your majesty and the light of Your face, I ask You to make my heart firm in memorizing Your Book as You have taught it to me, and grant me that I recite it in the manner that pleases You. O Creator of the heavens and the earth! O Allah! O Most Merciful! By Your majesty and the light of Your face, illuminate my sight with Your book, loosen my tongue with it, open my heart with it, expand my chest with it, and cleanse my body with it. For I cannot be aided in truth except by You, nor can I obtain it except from You. There is no power and no strength except in Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent.”

Perform this practice for three or seven Friday nights, and Allah’s permission, your dua will be accepted. It is upon the One who sent me with the truth that no believer has ever asked for anything and been denied.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) testified: “By Allah! Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah after five or seven Fridays, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah! I used to only memorize four or five verses and then forget them when I recite them to myself. Today, I can memorize forty verses, and when I recite them to myself, the Book of Allah seems to be before my eyes. Formerly, I would hear a hadith [prophetic tradition] and then not be able to repeat it. Now, I listen to a hadith and then am able to relate it to another without missing a single letter.’” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Abu al-Hasan! May my grandfather be sacrificed for you, you are a believer!” (Tirmidhi, Adab, 131)
