The Essence of Sensitivity
A truly happy individual and a harmonious society are built on the foundation of sensitivity. It’s about extending the kindness we desire for ourselves to others, diligently fulfilling our duties. Sensitivity means valuing another person’s life and possessions as much as your own, respecting their dignity and honor.
Our Responsibilities to Family & Community
Being sensitive towards our family, community, and all of humanity is a fundamental requirement of being Muslim. As the Quran states: “O you who believe! Take care of your duties to Allah…” [Quran 5:105]. Indifference and apathy are not qualities that become a Muslim. We must strive to fulfill our responsibilities with diligence.
A sensitive Muslim demonstrates respect and compassion towards parents, spouses, and children. They embody the spirit of brotherhood, fostering peace within society. They feel the pain of every oppressed person, regardless of location, and diligently perform their duties.
Environmental Stewardship
Islam calls upon Muslims to be sensitive towards the world entrusted to them. Just as we keep our homes, workplaces, and places of worship clean, so too should we maintain the cleanliness of our surroundings. We must show respect for forests, soil, and water – taking necessary precautions today to avoid future crises like depleted resources.
Respecting Time
Muslims are expected to be mindful of time, avoiding wastefulness and utilizing it productively. Work is a characteristic of the believer; rest comes after completing tasks. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The believer is like a bee – it eats what is good and pure, produces what is good and pure, and does not spoil or damage anything.” This hadith concisely summarizes the importance of responsible action.
Building a Sustainable Future
Remember that building a livable world for ourselves and our children depends on being sensitive to our surroundings, mindful of our time, and compassionate towards all people.
We conclude this sermon with the following hadith: “Wherever you are, be aware of your duty to Allah! If you commit a bad deed knowingly or unknowingly, follow it with a good one to erase it. And treat people with beautiful character!”
