The Rose and the Clay: A Lesson in Love

Sheikh Sadi’s story of the rose and the clay offers powerful lessons on loving the Prophet, cultivating excellent character, and achieving spiritual proximity – a central theme when discussing Prophet’s love.

Sheikh Sadi narrates a symbolic tale in his work, Gulistan:

The Story of the Rose and the Clay

One day at the bathhouse, a friend gave me fragrant clay (a cleansing earth). I asked the clay:

“O blessed one, are you musk or amber? I am captivated by your fragrance, which seems to caress the soul.”

The clay responded to me (in a symbolic language):

“I was just ordinary soil. But I lay beneath a rose bush and was moistened and kneaded with its dewdrops every morning. Through this closeness with the rose, its pleasant fragrance permeated within me. Otherwise, I am nothing more than an ordinary piece of earth. (This beautiful fragrance belongs to that rose).”

The Moral of the Story

The rose symbolizes our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

The poet Fuzuli eloquently expressed in his couplet:

Let the gardener give water to his rose garden, no effort needed;

For a single rose cannot bloom as beautifully as the Prophet’s face!

Even if gardeners watered thousands of rose gardens and displayed all their skills, they could never cultivate a rose as beautiful as the blessed face of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The most important lesson in this school of life is:

  • To truly know the Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to take a share from his heart and fragrance.
  • To be like a nightingale, burning with longing for that Rose in the early hours.
  • To become a dewdrop on that Rose’s petal, or;
  • To become fertile soil brought to life by the mercy drops falling from that Rose.

A Reflection

The heart of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is like a paradise garden adorned with rare and exquisite flowers, fragrant roses. How much do we partake in the gentle breeze blowing from that garden?

How similar are our family lives and social relationships to his? To what extent do we represent the smiling face of Islam, its heart, elegance, grace, and splendor?
