The Path of the Anatolian Dervish: Embracing Suffering

The Anatolian dervish embodies a unique spiritual journey, persevering through trials and dedicating themselves to selfless service. Their understanding of hardship, sacrifice, and devotion is beautifully articulated in the teachings of Mevlana Rumi and other esteemed Islamic figures.

Love’s Power: Transforming Suffering into Beauty

Mevlana (Rumi) eloquently described this profound connection:

“Through love, sorrows become sweet, and through love, appearances turn to gold. Love clarifies impurities, purifying the essence. Without love, even incurable ailments find healing. Through love, the dead are brought back to life. Love makes kings humble. Love transforms prisons into rose gardens. Love illuminates dark homes with light. Through love, fire becomes divine light. In short, through love, adversity turns into mercy.”

Indeed, all virtues and successes, all blessings and attainments, arise through love and selflessness. As Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan beautifully expressed:

“From love came Muhammad,
Without Muhammad, what comes from love?”

Embracing Thorns: The Dervish’s Perspective

The esteemed scholar Es’ad Erbilî shared a powerful insight:

“On the path of love’s garden, thorns are not feared! I gather hundreds of blossoms from atop each thorn!”

He further elaborated:

“In the garden of dervishhood, I find pleasure in suffering. If I make my pillow of thorns, I will see the Rose in my dream!”
