Slaughtering a Qurban is a significant act of worship during Eid al-Adha. This guide outlines the correct procedure for slaughtering a Qurban, emphasizing respect for the animal and adherence to Islamic principles. It’s crucial to understand the steps involved to ensure the ritual is performed correctly.
Preparing the Animal
The animal should be transported to the slaughterhouse gently, avoiding any unnecessary distress. Before the sacrifice, it must be laid on its left side facing the Qibla (direction of prayer). Ideally, the individual performing the Qurban should personally carry out the act; however, if that’s not possible, a trusted representative can be appointed.
Recitation and Dua
It is highly recommended that the owner is present during the slaughter. While laying the animal down, it’s customary to recite verses from the Quran such as: “I have turned my face towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, a true religion…” (Al-An’am 6:79) and “My prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah…” (Al-An’am 6:162-163). A dua (supplication) can also be offered, such as “O Allah, accept this from me just as You accepted from Abraham.” Following this, the individual should recite takbir (saying ‘Allahu Akbar’) and tahlil (declaring the oneness of God).
Essential Considerations During Slaughter
- Minimize Distress: The person performing the slaughter must ensure the animal experiences minimal distress. Avoid showing the knife to the animal beforehand.
- Sharp Knife: A sharp, clean blade is essential for a swift and humane sacrifice.
- Takbir: While slaughtering, say “Bismillahi Allahu Akbar” (In the name of God, Allah is the greatest). The owner should also participate in this declaration.
- Validity: According to the Hanafi school of thought, if the person performing the slaughter intentionally omits saying bismillah (in the name of God), the meat is not permissible.
The Slaughtering Process
The fundamental requirement for a valid Qurban sacrifice is the complete severing of the animal’s throat, ensuring the jugular vein, carotid artery, and trachea are cut. For cattle, sheep, and goats, this involves laying them down and cutting across their throats. Deves (camels) require a different method – they are restrained by their front leg and slaughtered across the chest.
To minimize suffering, it is permissible to stun the animal before slaughtering; however, it’s important to note that stunning does not constitute death in itself. The blood must flow freely for a sufficient period after the cut.
