Prophet Muhammad’s Visits to Graves

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) frequently visited the graves of his companions in Baki Cemetery and the martyrs of Uhud. According to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would regularly visit Baki Cemetery every night, offering greetings and supplications for those buried there.

Angelic Guidance and Supplication

There is a beautiful account of Jibril (peace be upon him) visiting the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):

“Your Lord commands you to go to Baki and ask forgiveness for them.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) immediately responded to this command and visited Jannat al-Baqi. (Muslim, Funerals, 103)

Visiting Uhud Martyrs

Abdullah bin Abi Farwa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited the graves of the martyrs of Uhud and said:

“O Allah, witness that Your servant and Messenger is indeed a martyr. And until the Day of Resurrection, whoever visits these martyrs and offers them greetings, they will reciprocate their greetings.” (Hakim, III, 31/4320)

Duas for the Departed

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also taught his companions a supplication to recite when visiting cemeteries:

“Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of this land, believers and Muslims! We hope that we will soon join you. May Allah forgive us and you.” (Muslim, Funerals, 104)
