A Glimpse into the Prophet’s Character

Narrated by Imam Hussein (ra): “I asked my father (Ali) about the relationship of the Messenger of Allah with his friends. He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah – peace and blessings be upon him – was always smiling, gentle, and kind. He never possessed bad manners, a harsh heart, one who shouts, uses foul language, finds fault, or is miserly. He overlooked disliked things, did not disappoint those who expected from him, nor frustrated their desires.’” [Tirmidhi, Shamail, 160.] This quote beautifully illustrates the Prophet’s exceptional character.

Physical Appearance and Demeanor

Umm Ma’bed narrates: “(My husband, Abu Ma’bad) said to me, ‘Describe the Messenger of Allah to me.’ I said, ‘Certainly.’ He said, ‘He was of a pure appearance and gentle nature; his face was radiant. His build was beautiful. He was cheerful. Neither fat nor thin. Not very tall or dark-skinned. He had a fair complexion. He possessed a fine and harmonious appearance. He was dignified. The black and white parts of his eyes were distinct. He had long eyelashes.’” [Abu Bakr ash-Shaybani, Al-Ahad wa’l-masani, V, 629-631.] This provides a vivid description of the Prophet’s physical presence.
