According to Hz. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this important supplication between the tashahhud and salam in prayer:

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ، وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ، وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَفْتُ، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ، وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ، لآ إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

“Allahummagfirli mâ kaddamtü vemâ ahhartu, vemâ esrartu vemâ a‘lentü, vemâ esraftu, vemâ ente a‘lamü bihî minnî, ente’l-mukaddimü ve ente’l-muahhir, lâ ilâhe illâ ente.”

What is the Meaning of the Allahummagfirli Prayer?

To better understand the meaning of this valuable prayer, let’s examine each expression:

  • Mâ kaddamtü: My past mistakes and sins that I have committed.
  • Vemâ ahhartu: The mistakes I will make in the future and the sins I haven’t yet had the opportunity to commit.
  • Vemâ esrartü: My hidden sins that I have kept in my heart and not told anyone.
  • Vemâ a‘lentü: The sins I committed openly, witnessed by others.
  • Vemâ esraftu: The mistakes I committed with excessiveness and immoderate behavior.
  • Vemâ ente a‘lamü bihî minnî: Flaws that You know better than I do, of which I am not even fully aware.
  • Ente’l-mukaddimü ve ente’l-muahhir: You are the one who brings forward and You are the one who leaves behind; everything is under Your control.
  • Lâ ilâhe illâ ente: There is no deity worthy of worship except You.
