Meaning of the Berat Night Prayer:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
O Allah, O Lord of grace and generosity, who is not graced, O Possessor of Majesty and Bounty, O He whose favor and grace are abundant, there is no god but You, you are the helper of those who seek refuge in You, the granter of safety to those who take shelter in You, the Exalted Being in whom the fearful find security.
O Allah! If you have written me down in your sight, in the Ummu’l-Kitab (the Mother of the Book), as unhappy/bad or deprived or rejected or with a meager provision, O Allah, erase my wickedness, deprivation, rejection and scarcity of provision with Your grace and generosity, write me down in your sight, in the Ummu’l-Kitab, as a good/happy, prosperous and successful servant. Surely You have spoken a word in Your Book which was revealed on the tongue of Your Messenger, and Your word is truth:
“Allah obliterates [what He wills], and confirms [what He wills]. The Ummu’l-Kitab (the Mother of the Book) is with Him.” (Ar-Ra’d, 39)
O Divine! With Your greatest manifestation, on the blessed mid-Sha’ban night where “every wise matter is determined,” (Ad-Dukhan, 4) and a definite decision is made, remove from us all calamities known to us, unknown to us, and those which You know. Surely You are the Most Exalted and the Most Generous. Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions!” (See Ali al-Muttaqi, no: 5090)
On the fifteenth night of Sha’ban, the Night of Berat, three recitations of Surat Yasin will be recited after the evening prayer, followed by this Berat prayer each time. The first recitation of Yasin should be recited with the intention of being among Allah’s happy servants. The second recitation should be recited with the intention of a long and blessed life. The third recitation should be recited with the intention of being safe from misfortunes and for a blessed provision.
On the Night of Berat, after Isha prayer, one hundred rak’ahs are performed, alternating between prayers. After Surah Fatiha in each rak’ah, ten repetitions of Ihlâs-i Sharif are recited. Those who cannot recite ten repetitions of Ihlâs-i Sharif may recite five or three times. Upon completion of this prayer, as much salawat-i sharifa as possible is recited, sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah Ta’ala, and requests and supplications for worldly and hereafter needs are made.
