Breaking the Fast Dua (Recitation)
اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ اٰمَنْتُ وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَعَلٰى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ
Meaning of the Dua to Recite Before Breaking the Fast
“O Allah, I have fasted for You, and with You I believe, and upon You I rely, and with Your provision I break my fast.” With these supplications, we seek refuge in our Lord, praying that He may grant us the completion of our fasts through His grace.
Intention and Sincerity
“ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ ” meaning “O Allah, I have fasted for You.” expresses our heartfelt devotion during the fast and our intention free from hypocrisy. It signifies that we are fasting solely for the pleasure of Allah.
The Importance of Faith
“ وَبِكَ اٰمَنْتُ ” meaning “I believe in You.” declares that faith is the foundation of all acts of worship. Acts of worship such as prayer and fasting should be performed not for incidental benefits like physical well-being, but because they are a requirement of our faith. The spiritual degree of worship and servitude to Allah is proportional to the strength of one’s faith.
The Importance of Reliance on God
“ وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ ” meaning “I rely upon You.” also acknowledges our weakness and expresses our submission to the boundless power and majesty of our Lord. We should strengthen our feelings of reliance on Allah, who is Eternal (Bâkī), rather than on transient beings, thereby giving our acts of worship a unique spiritual dimension.
Awareness of Sustenance
“ وَعَلٰى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ ” meaning “I break my fast with Your provision.” demonstrates an awareness that goes beyond sustenance, focusing on the “The Sustainer” (Rezzâk). We sincerely acknowledge in our hearts that we live within Allah’s dominion and that all provision comes from Him.
