The Most Virtuous Dua to Recite When Leaving Home: The Prophet’s (PBUH) Hadith Regarding Reliance, Righteousness, and Social Ethics
Narrated from Ummu Salama (RA), whose original name was Hind Bintu Abu Umeiya Huzayfa al-Mahzumiyya, that the Prophet (SAW) would recite the following dua when leaving his home:
“I begin in the Name of Allah and I put my trust in Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from going astray, being led astray, stumbling, committing injustice, being wronged, acting ignorantly, and being subjected to the actions of the ignorant.” (Abu Dawud, Adab 103; Tirmidhi, Daawat 34; Ibn Majah, Dua 18)
Explanation of the Hadith
Reliance and certainty are a consciousness of being with Allah at every moment. Constant trust is the result of this awareness. According to the narration of Ummu Salama (RA), the Messenger of Allah (SAW) would renew his reliance when leaving his home (according to one narration, while looking at the sky). It is also narrated from Ummu Salama (RA) that the Prophet (SAW) did not leave his home without reciting this dua.
RELIANCE ON ALLAH IN EVERY STEP: RELIANCE AND SEEKING REFUGE
Leaving the house and mingling with society, and engaging in daily affairs means that. The Prophet (SAW) expresses that he trusts and seeks refuge in Allah in all his endeavors. Adhering to rights in relationships, not deviating from the right path, seeking refuge from being deceived by others, from committing or experiencing injustice in dealings, and from acting ignorantly towards people, is beginning the day with a complete sense of trust.
Becoming engrossed in worldly affairs and forgetting Allah, and being swayed by people’s suggestions and deviating from the right path can lead to many errors. Attempting to prevent this danger by seeking Allah’s help and protection from the very first step is maintaining vigilance.
In the hadith, the Prophet (SAW), by seeking refuge from misguidance, disgrace, stumbling, injustice, and ignorance, draws attention to the importance of these matters in society and indicates the need to seek help to avoid such dangers.
The honorable hadith demonstrates that complete trust in Allah and unwavering faith should also be reflected in supplications.
