Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil
Emr-i bil-maruf wa nahy anil-munkar, the act of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, stands as one of the most fundamental duties in Islam and a vital pillar supporting a thriving society. Imam Ghazali extensively addresses this concept within his Ihya’ (Revival of Religious Sciences), specifically in the section on customs, stating that it is a fard kifaya – a collective obligation. If individuals possessing knowledge and wisdom fail to fulfill this responsibility, the entire community risks spiritual decline and sin. Remaining silent in the face of wrongdoing makes one complicit in it; for just as a leak left unaddressed will sink an entire ship.
The Etiquette of Admonishment and the Duty of Scholars
When fulfilling the duty of forbidding evil, adherence to subtle principles of etiquette is paramount. The one offering admonition must first possess knowledge, patience, and compassion. A warning delivered through force or public humiliation often proves counterproductive, fostering resentment and animosity. A true scholar is akin to a compassionate physician, approaching with care and seeking healing. Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani emphasized that those who guide the ignorant and reject evil should instill the commands of the shari’a (Islamic law) in the people through wisdom and love.
Societal Harmony and Divine Approval
In a society where wrongdoing goes unchecked and injustice is passively accepted, divine mercy will not be manifested, and calamities will proliferate. The duty of emr bil-maruf requires empathy for one’s neighbor and serving as a shield against the moral decay of society. One who remains solely preoccupied with their own worship, turning a blind eye to the immorality around them, cannot attain true salvation. Guided by authentic scholars – those who “invite you from ignorance to certainty, from animosity to sincerity, from hypocrisy to devotion” – demonstrating truth to society, establishing justice and equity on Earth is the most noble responsibility upon every conscious believer.
