SUPPLICATIONS TO RECITE BEFORE SLEEPING

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“When you lie down for sleep, if you recite al-Fātiḥa (the Opening chapter of the Qur’an) and then al-Ikhlāṣ (the chapter of Sincerity), you will be safe from everything except death.” (Suyūṭī, al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr, no: 892)

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you wish to lie down in your bed, perform a full ablution (ghusl) as you would for ritual purity.

Then lie down on your right side and say:

Recitation: “Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayka wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayka wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayka wa aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayka, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayka, lā maljaʾa wa-lā manjā minka illā ilayka. Āmantu bi-kitābika alladhī anzalta wa bi-nabiyyika alladhī arsalta.” (O Allah! I have surrendered myself to You, turned my face to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and relied upon You, in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.)

Meaning: “O Allah! I have surrendered myself to You, turned my face to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and relied upon You. I seek refuge in You with hope and fear. There is no place of refuge and no escape from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.” Say this! If you die (in your sleep), you will die upon iman (faith). Let this supplication be your last words that night.” (Bukhārī, Wuḍūʾ 75, Daʿawāt 6; Muslim, Dhikr 56)

When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down in his bed, he would say:

Recitation: “Bismika Allāhumma aḥyā wa amūt: O Allah!”

Meaning: “In Your Name, O Allah, I die and I live (I sleep and I awaken).”

SUPPLICATION TO RECITE UPON WAKING FROM SLEEP

When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) awoke from sleep, he would say:

Recitation: “Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi al-nushūr”

Meaning: “Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.” (Tirmidhī, Daʿawāt 28; see also Bukhārī, Daʿawāt 7; Muslim, Dhikr 59)
