Prayers to Recite During a Visit to the Graves
Dua 1: The Baki Cemetery Prayer
Aisha (RA) narrated:
Rasulullah (PBUH) towards the end of the nights he spent with Aisha, would visit the Baki cemetery and recite the following prayer:
Recitation: “Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the land of believers! You have met what was foretold to happen to you. You have been postponed for a while. By Allah’s grace, we will soon join you. O Allah! Forgive those who are buried in the Baki’l-Garkad cemetery!”
Meaning: In this prayer, greetings are sent to the believing inhabitants of the grave, it is reminded that they have passed into the afterlife, and forgiveness is sought from Allah. (Muslim, Janaza 102; Abu Dawud, Janaza 79; Nasa’i, Janaza 103; Ibn Maja, Janaza 36, Zuhd 36)
Dua 2: The Prayer Taught to the Companions
Bureida (RA) narrated:
The Prophet (PBUH) taught the following prayer to his companions to recite when they visited a cemetery:
Recitation: “The peace be upon you, O people of the dwellings, among the believers and Muslims. And indeed, by Allah, we are coming to you. We ask Allah for our well-being and your well-being.”
Meaning: In this prayer, greetings are sent to the believing inhabitants of the grave, it is expressed that they will soon join them, and forgiveness and mercy are sought from Allah for both themselves and them. (Muslim, Janaza 104; Nasa’i, Janaza 103; Ibn Maja, Janaza 36)
Dua 3: The Medina Cemetery Prayer
Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated:
Rasulullah (PBUH) visited some graves in Medina. Turning his face towards them, he made the following supplication:
Meaning: “Peace be upon you, O those who are buried in these graves! May Allah forgive us and you. You have gone before us. We will follow you.” (Tirmidhi, Janaza 59)
