Prayers of the Prophet (PBUH) – What Did He Seek From Allah?
Our Prophet, Hz. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), throughout his life, turned to Allah, sought His help, and made various supplications (duas). These duas serve as a source of inspiration for us, both to fulfill our personal needs and to find peace within our souls. In this article, you will discover some of the most beautiful prayers uttered by Our Prophet (PBUH).
The Prayer of Light (Nur)
According to a narration from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the duas made by Our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is as follows:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِى قَلْبِى نُورًا وَفِى بَصَرِى نُورًا وَفِى سَمْعِى نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِى نُورًا وَعَنْ يَسَارِى نُورًا وَفَوْقِى نُورًا وَتَحْتِى نُورًا وَاَمَامِى نُورًا وَخَلْفِى نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ لِى نُورًا -وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ- عَصَبِى وَلَحْمِى وَدَمِى وَشَعْرِى وَبَشَرِى
“O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light in my right side, light in my left side, light above me, light below me, and light before me. And (in one narration) grant me light in my sinews, flesh, blood, hair, and skin!” (Bukhari, Duas, 9; Muslim, Musafirin, 181)
“La Ilaha Illallah – There is No God But Allah” Dua
According to a narration from Muqir bin Shu’ba (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the duas made by the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) is as follows:
لٰا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَا مَانِعَ لِمَا اَعْطَيْتَ وَلَا مُعْطِىَ لِمَا مَنَعْتَ وَلَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الْجَدِّ مِنْكَ الْجَدُّ
“There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise; He is powerful over everything. O Allah! There is none who can prevent what You give, nor one who can grant what You withhold, and wealth benefits not the wealthy man in Your sight [i.e., only righteous deeds benefit].” (Bukhari, Adhan, 155; Muslim, Salat, 193)
Dua of Reliance on Allah (Tawakkul)
According to a narration from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), when some people came to the Prophet (PBUH) and tried to frighten him, saying, “People have gathered their men and weapons to fight you. You do not have enough power to confront them. So take precaution against them,” the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) made this dua to increase the certainty of faith (yaqeen) of the believers:
حَسْبُنَا اللّٰهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
“Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs!” (Bukhari, Tafsir, 3/13; Wahaidi, Asbab al-Nuzul, p. 135)
Dua for This World and the Hereafter
According to a narration from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) often made this dua:
اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّنَا اٰتِنَا فِى الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِى الْاٰخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“O our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and deliver us from the torment of Hellfire!” (Bukhari, Tafsir 38; Muslim, Zikr 23)
Dua Seeking Refuge in Allah
According to a narration from Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to say:
َللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى خَطِيئَتِى وَجَهْلِى وَإِسْرَافِى فِى أَمْرِى وَمَا أَنْتَ اَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّى اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى هَزْلِى وَجِدِّى وَخَطَائِى وَعَمْدِى وُكُلُّ ذٰلِكَ عِنْدِى
“O Allah! Forgive my sins, my ignorance, my excesses in my affairs, and what You know of shortcomings that I am not aware of. O Allah! Forgive my playfulness, my seriousness, my errors, and my intentional acts; for all these are within me.” (Bukhari, Duas, 60; Muslim, 70)
Zikr Recited 100 Times Daily
According to a narration from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“Whoever says:
يلٰا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لٰا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
“There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise; He is powerful over everything.” one hundred times each day, then one hundred good deeds are recorded for him, one hundred sins are erased from his record, and he is protected from Satan until evening comes, and no one earns more reward than him except someone who says it more.” (Bukhari, Adhan, 155)
Dua Encompassing All the Prayers
“O Allah! By the truth of Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, grant me a life that is good as long as it is beneficial to me, and when death comes to me, make it good. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from fear, and I ask not to be separated from the truth whether in joy or sorrow; I desire moderation in poverty and wealth, and I seek an everlasting blessing. I seek my progeny (lineage) as a light, and that you accept my submission.” (Nasa’i, Sahw, 62)
