Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Healing Prayers and Ways to Recovery

Sheikh Abdullah Sert explains the healing prayers recited by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the sick, along with supplications narrated from Hadith of Lady Aisha (RA), which can be recited during times of illness. He shares examples from his own prayers for himself and his loved ones.

Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Healing Prayers for the Sick

Our Prophet sallallahu aleyhi wa sellem, when visiting the sick, would always make supplication and beseech Allah for their recovery. The following prayers are among the important ones recited by our Prophet (PBUH) with the intention of healing. All Muslims can recite these prayers for those who are ill.

It is narrated from Aisha -radıyallâhu anhâ- that the Prophet -sallâllâhu aleyhi wa sellem-, when a family member fell ill, would stroke them with his right hand and recite the following supplication:

اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّاف۪ى لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَماً

“O Allâh, Lord of mankind! Remove the affliction and grant relief. You are the One who heals; there is no cure except Your cure, a cure that leaves behind no illness.” (Bukhari, Mardah 20, 38, 40; Muslim, Salam 46-49)

***

On one occasion, when the Prophet Muhammad was ill, Gabriel -peace be upon him- came and asked:

“–O Muhammad, are you sick?” The Messenger of Allah -sallâllâhu aleyhi wa sellem- replied:

“–Yes!” Gabriel -peace be upon him- then supplicated:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ أَرْقِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ حَاسِدٍ اَللّٰهُ يَشْفِيكَ، بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ أَرْقِيكَ

“–In the name of Allah, I recite for you from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you; in the name of Allah, I recite for you.” (Muslim, Salam, 40)

This supplication is an example of a significant healing prayer made by Gabriel -peace be upon him- for our Prophet sallallahu aleyhi wa sellem.
