It is part of the etiquette of repentance that a person intending to repent prays two rak’ahs (units of prayer), then offers praise to Allah, blessings and peace upon His Messenger, before seeking forgiveness and imploring for mercy. Repentance and Supplication Prayers from Our Prophet (PBUH)
Two of the many prayers that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) recited for forgiveness are:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِى ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ ، فَاغْفِرْ لِى مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ ، وَارْحَمْنِى إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
“O Allah! Indeed, I have wronged myself greatly, and there is no one who forgives sins except You, so forgive me with a forgiveness from Your presence and have mercy on me. Indeed, it is You who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Bukhari, Azan 149; Muslim, Dhikr, 48)
This supplication is significant for those who realize the magnitude of their sins and seek forgiveness from Allah.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِى خَطِيئَتِى وَجَهْلِى وَإِسْرَافِى فِى أَمْرِى كُلِّهِ ، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّى ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى خَطَايَاىَ وَعَمْدِى وَجَهْلِى وَهَزْلِى ، وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِى ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ ، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ ، وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِير
“O Lord! Forgive my sins, my ignorance, and my excessiveness in all matters, and what You know of it that is more than I do. O Allah! Forgive my sins, my intentional acts, my ignorance, and my jesting, for all of this is with me. O Allah! Forgive me for what I have done before and what I will do later, what I concealed and what I declared, You are the one who brings forward, and You are the one who delays, and You are over all things capable.” (Bukhari, Adab 60)
This supplication expresses a comprehensive request for forgiveness encompassing all our errors and shortcomings.
