The Nature and Levels of Yaqin
Yaqin represents the highest level of cognition, where doubt and uncertainty vanish completely, and faith becomes an unwavering light within the heart. Ibn Ataullah al-Iskandari states that when the light of Yaqin shines in the heart, the true nature of all things is seen as they are – the afterlife perceived as real and this world as illusory, directly through this divine illumination. In Sufi science, Yaqin is divided into three levels: ‘Ilm al-Yaqin (certainty based on knowledge), ‘Ayn al-Yaqin (certainty through witnessing), and Haqq al-Yaqin (certainty attained by experiencing the truth directly). Yaqin is a divine light that Allah Most High creates in the servant’s heart, enabling them to perceive the secrets of the afterlife even while still in this world.
From Well to Sunshine: Transitioning from Knowledge to Witnessing
The transition from ‘Ilm al-Yaqin to ‘Ayn al-Yaqin is moving beyond the limits of intellect and knowledge to reach the heart’s witnessing. Fariduddin Attar explains this with a powerful analogy of a well and the sun: A person raised in a well would be astonished if suddenly brought out into the sunlight, unable immediately to comprehend its nature. After some time, their eyes adjust, ‘ilm arises regarding the sun, followed by witnessing its mysteries and attaining ‘ayn al-yaqin. Similarly, one cannot attain true knowledge of the Ka’bah simply through hearing about it; the real realization is to be illuminated by the light of divine manifestations and to witness reality directly, without intermediaries.
The Effect of Yaqin: Turning Away from the World and Discernment
A believer whose heart is filled with the light of Yaqin finds the afterlife present alongside them, clearly perceiving the transience of this world and how its lights fade quickly towards impermanence. The most beneficial Yaqin is that which magnifies Allah in one’s eyes, diminishes everything else (the created realm), establishes a balance of khawf (fear) and raja (hope) within the heart, and fosters profound discernment. In Sufism, discernment (firasah) is discovering this Yaqin and seeing the unseen – which is directly an effect of faith and witnessing. This unwavering belief in the hearts of those possessing Yaqin protects them from false desires and elevates them to the peaks of eternal bliss.
