The Nature of the Nafs and the Balance of Forces
The purpose of human existence is to serve our Creator, Allah (SWT), and attain spiritual maturity. The greatest obstacle on this path is the nafs al-ammara – the self dominated by desires that can enslave a person. Imam Ghazali discusses the forces of anger, passion, and intellect inherent in human creation; he emphasizes that excess or deficiency in these forces is detrimental, and justice is achieved only through finding the middle way. By its very nature, the nafs tends towards negativity. Therefore, one should not immediately accept the desires of the nafs but must constantly monitor it, opposing suspicious inclinations.
Opposing the Nafs and *Mujahada* (Striving)
True spiritual awakening begins with abandoning the comforts and base pleasures to which the nafs is accustomed. Spiritual guides counsel a perpetual jihad against self-centered desires. One must wage war against negative emotions arising from within, opposing the nafs with the sword of taqwa (God-consciousness). A person who submits to their nafs is like a careless individual deceived by the slumber of a predator; for although the nafs may appear to sleep, it seizes its opportunity to overcome its master. Patience is essential in this relentless struggle, as Allah (SWT) proclaims, “Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (Al-Baqarah).
Dominance of the Heart and *Itminan* (Tranquility)
The refinement of the nafs only reaches perfection through obedience to the heart and the subtle self (*sirr*). As the nafs gradually purifies itself from its bad traits and turns towards good, it begins to act according to the command of the heart and ultimately attains the attribute of being *mutmainnah* – tranquil. A nafs that reaches this level has left behind material feelings and transitioned into the spiritual realm. Only when a person recognizes their own weaknesses and desires can they truly know their Creator. It must be remembered that reforming the nafs is not achieved through outward displays or dry asceticism, but rather through the heart’s complete orientation towards truth and its annihilation in the pleasure of Allah (SWT).
