The Meaning of the Prayer

This famous prayer, uttered by Aziz Mahmûd Hüdâyî Hazretleri, has resonated in hearts for centuries.

Aziz Mahmûd Hüdâyî Hazretleri recited this renowned prayer (duā) to revive the hearts of his students (followers).

AZIZ MAHMÛD HÜDÂYÎ HAZRETLERİ’NİN MÜNTESİPLERİNE DUASI (Prayer of Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî Hazretleri for His Followers)

One day, while in conversation with Sultan Ahmed Han, Hz. Hüdâyî was asked:

“– There is a narration stating that Shaykh Abdülkâdir Gîlânî will intercede on behalf of many sinners among his followers on the Day of Judgment. What is said regarding its authenticity and lack thereof?” Upon brief contemplation, Hz. Hüdâyî announced the authenticity of the narration. Sultan Ahmed then inquired:

“– Do you not have a promise or assurance for us?” Hz. Hüdâyî responded by raising his hands and saying:

“Those who join our Sufi order (tarīka) until the Day of Judgment, and recite ‘Fātiha’ once passing in front of my tomb, are ours. May those affiliated with us not drown at sea, may they not experience poverty in their later years! Let them not depart without safeguarding their faith, and let them know and announce when they will die!” (Mehmed Gülşen Efendi states regarding this prayer: “It is due to the acceptance of this prayer that from the time of Pīr Hz. until now, no member of the Celvetiyya Sufi order has died by drowning, and many Celvetî followers have explicitly announced the time of their passing.” Külliyât, 10.)
