What is Salutation? How to Offer Salutations
Salutation (Salawat) is the plural form of the word salat. It refers to the supplication made when the name of our Prophet -peace and blessings be upon him- is mentioned. Salutations are an important way to express love and respect for the Prophet in the sight of Allah.
A verse commands us to offer salutations:
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet -peace and blessings be upon him-. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with a greeting of peace!” (Al-Ahzab, 56)
Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also emphasized the importance of offering salutations:
“Regarding you all, the one closest to me is the one who sends the most blessings and greetings upon me.” (Tirmidhi, Vitr, 21/484)
