The Necessity of Spiritual Guidance
For a traveler seeking truth and Allah’s pleasure, there is a need for a guide who has previously traversed that path and understands its dangers. Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani (may Allah be pleased with him) eloquently explains this necessity: “Your eye does not see; seek one to lead you on the way. One who sets out without guidance may roll into a pit… Find someone to teach you what you do not know. When you find them, cling to them and do not let go.” It is exceedingly difficult for a person to discipline their nafs (ego) solely through reason and reading books. Shaykh Sadi compares those new to the spiritual path to young children; just as a child learns to walk by holding onto a strong wall, so too does a seeker of truth protect themselves from spiritual setbacks by adhering to a *Murshid-i Kamil*.
Qualities of the Perfect Guide
Not every individual with a beard or wearing a cloak can be a guide. A true *Murshid-i Kamil* is one who has deepened not only in outward (apparent) knowledge but also in inward (heartfelt) knowledge, purified themselves from the bad traits of their nafs, and been refined by divine character. Shaykh Geylani (may Allah be pleased with him) emphatically states that those who have not yet mastered their own selves and whose vision extends only a step ahead cannot be leaders or guides to others. Hacı Bektaş-i Veli emphasizes that true submission – *peydâ ve nihânda* (openly and secretly) – is essential to liberate oneself from the tribulations of the heart and worldly attachments.
The Role of Adab (Etiquette) and Submission
When a *Murshid-i Kamil* is present, the greatest responsibility for the student (*murid*) lies in demonstrating adab (etiquette), loyalty, and submission. Presenting one’s own intellect and limited perspectives in the presence of the guide can lead to the cessation of spiritual blessings. The principle, “His word and action should be your proof,” expresses absolute trust. Knowledge and character are acquired through sitting in the company of great personalities, side by side with them, and serving them. A person who is overly confident and does not appreciate the wisdom or guidance of others is destined to stumble even on the right path. Therefore, a seeker of truth should never reproach their spiritual doctor (*Murshid*) and must strictly adhere to the spiritual prescriptions they receive.
