The Supplications of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him)
In the Noble Qur'an, the prophet whose supplications are narrated the most, by the wisdom of Allah, is our Prophet Ibrahim (ʿalayhi al-salām). In his supplications, one senses a deep devotion and entreaty to his Exalted Lord.
The Supplications of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) (With Verses)
Although Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was filled with love for children, he was granted offspring in his old age. This circumstance increased the sincerity of his supplications and his gratitude to his Lord.
“My Lord! Grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” (Sāffāt, 100) With this supplication, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was given the glad tidings of Prophet Ismāʿīl (peace be upon him). In his supplications, he expressed both his personal requests and his pleas for the well-being of the community.
Supplications Made in Mecca
When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Hājar left their son Ismāʿīl (peace be upon him) in Mecca and continued on their way, he turned towards the House and made the following supplications:
“My Lord, make this city (Mecca) secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. My Lord, indeed they [idols] have led many among the people astray. So whoever follows me, then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me—indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful. Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your Sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.” (Ibrāhīm, 35–37)
Supplications During the Construction of the Kaʿba
As Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his son Ismāʿīl (peace be upon him) were raising the foundations of the Kaʿba, they repeatedly made the following supplication:
“Our Lord, accept [this] from us!”
Supplication of Acceptance After the Construction of the Kaʿba
After the construction of the Kaʿba was completed, the supplications made are expressed in the Qur'an as follows:
“Our Lord, make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim [submitting] nation to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.” (al-Baqara, 128)
Other Supplications
Other supplications of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) found in the Noble Qur'an are as follows:
“Our Lord, surely You know what we conceal and what we declare. And nothing is hidden from Allah on the earth or in the heaven.” (Ibrāhīm, 38)
“Praise be to Allah, who has granted to me in old age Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.” (Ibrāhīm, 39)
“My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.” (Ibrāhīm, 40)
“Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.” (Ibrāhīm, 41)
Supplications in Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ
In Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ, the supplications pouring forth from the heart of our Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) are as follows:
“My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous. And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations. And make me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure. And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray. And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected—the Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children, but only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.” (al-Shuʿarāʾ, 83–89)
