The Salat and Salam Narrated by Abu Mas’ud Al-Ansari (R.A.)
The salat narrated from the esteemed companions, Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari (R.A.), from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is as follows.
How to Recite Salat and Salam?
According to a narration by Imam Malik from the esteemed companions, Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari (d. 40/660), when the companions inquired about how to offer salat and salam, the Messenger of Allah instructed them as follows:
THE SALAT NARRATED BY ABU MAS’UD AL-ANSARI (R.A.)
اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى اٰلِهِ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى اٰلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وبارك عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى اٰلِهِ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى اٰلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Meaning: “O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim (Abraham). And bestow blessings upon Muhammad and his family, just as You bestowed blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, among all the worlds. Indeed, You are worthy of praise and glory.”
Teaching Salat and Salam
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his companions how to greet by saying “es-Selâmü aleyke eyyühe’n-nebiyyü wa rahmetullâhi wa berekâtüh” in the Tashahhud prayer. According to Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari, who narrated this hadith, on that day, the Prophet (PBUH) visited Sa’d ibn Ubadah at his home. Among those present was Bashir ibn Sa’d:
“O Messenger of Allah! Allah has commanded us to send salat and salam upon you; how should we offer salat and salam?” He asked. The Prophet (PBUH) did not immediately answer but remained silent. His silence may have been because he was awaiting revelation due to not knowing the answer to this question, or because the matter was left for him to ponder. However, his silence caused the esteemed companions to think, “Did we trouble the Messenger of Allah by asking this question? Was he not pleased with this question? We wish we had not asked.” Then, he responded by saying, “Say thus!” (See Malik, Muwatta’, Kasru’s-salât fi’s-sefer 67; Muslim, Salat 65, no. 405.)
