The Deformity of Complaining to Creation About the Creator

One of the most common mistakes humans make when faced with adversity is complaining about their troubles to others, thus rebelling against God. Abd al-Qadir al-Ghaylani (q.s.) warns believers on this matter, saying: “I advise you: Do not accuse your Merciful Lord regarding any blessing that has been bestowed upon you!” Rather, express gratitude and thankfulness; for it is more virtuous to declare thanks without carrying a spark of gratitude in your heart, than to reveal your circumstances and complain. Who can remain aloof from Allah’s blessings? Your complaint makes it real, increases your calamities, intensifies your punishment, causes Him to be angry with you and reject you. Every kind of calamity that befalls the children of Adam is due to their complaining to their Lord.

Allah’s Decree as a Merciful Physician

To understand the difficulties brought about by destiny, it is essential to focus on the Creator’s compassion. How can one complain to Him who is the Most Compassionate and the Most Merciful? He is the most merciful of all the merciful; He is the most accurate of all those who rule! He is wise, knowing everything. His mercy and compassion are abundant; He is exceedingly generous and never unjust to His servants. The people of wisdom are like a loving, compassionate, gentle, and sincere physician. Can a merciful mother be accused?

Silence and Avoiding Accusations of Allah’s Actions

A true believer is one who keeps his tongue in check in both adversity and prosperity and preserves his manners. O, you poor soul; be well-mannered! If you are incapable of enduring calamities, strive for patience. And when you are incapable of acceptance and agreement, be patient. When you find something, be pleased with it and agree with it. When you lose something, let it pass away. As a requirement of your good manners, turn to silence, patience, acceptance, and agreement with Him. Be wary of displeasing Him, and avoid accusing His actions! He knows its beginning, end, and nature; He is the one who creates its beneficial and harmful aspects. Even if your flesh were to be torn apart and cut into pieces with scissors, vehemently refrain from complaining!
