What is the purpose of the “Allahummaghfirli ma asrartu” prayer?
Our Prophet -peace and blessings be upon him- recited the following supplication to seek forgiveness for the sins we commit in secret:
Recitation:
“Allahummaghfirli ma asrartu wama a’lantu wama ehda’tü wama amedtü wama alimtü wama cehiltü.”
Meaning:
“O Allah! Forgive me for the sins I committed secretly, the sins I committed openly, the sins I committed unintentionally and knowingly, all my sins that I knew and did not know.” (Hakim, Du’awat, No: 1880, I, 510; see Ibn Abi Shaybah, Dua, 15, No: 29228)
When Should We Recite This Prayer?
The “Allahummaghfirli ma asrartu” prayer is especially recommended to be recited in supplications of repentance and seeking forgiveness at night. The virtue of this prayer increases when we become aware of our sins and turn to Allah with the feeling of remorse in our hearts.
