For What Purpose Is the “Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi…” Supplication Recited?

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), in order to be cleansed from sins and to seek forgiveness, made the following supplication:

“O Allah, I have greatly wronged my nafs (the lower self). None forgives sins except You. So forgive me with Your inexhaustible grace, and have mercy on me. For You alone are the One whose forgiveness is infinite, whose mercy knows no bounds.” (Bukhārī, Adhān 149, Daʿawāt 17, Tawḥīd 9; Muslim, Dhikr 48)

Allāhumma innī zalamtu nafsi ẓulman kabīran, fa-ghfir lī maghfiratan min ʿindika, innaka ʿafūwun karīm.
