Allâhümme İyyâke Na’büdü Du’a (Kunut Prayer 2) What is it?

The word kunut, which in dictionaries means “to obey, to be humble, to worship, to stand,” is a term used in jurisprudence to mean “to obey, to make supplication, and to seek refuge with Allah in prayer from any evil or to obtain goodness.” The Kunut Du’a is especially recited in the Witr prayer and increases the acceptance of prayers.

It is authentically established through hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Kunut on various occasions. This supports the permissibility of Kunut. (Bukhari, “Witir,” 7; Muslim, “Masajid,” 294-308). However, there are differing opinions among legal schools regarding the ruling of Kunut and where it should be recited in prayer.

Allâhümme iyyâke na’büdü wa laka nusallī wa nasjudu. Wa ilayka nisa’ū wa nakhafid. Narjū raḥmataka wa nakhashā ‘ażābaka. Inna ‘ażābaka bil-kuffār mulḥiq.

Meaning of Allâhümme İyyâke Na’büdü Du’a

O Allah! We only worship You and for You alone do we offer prayer and prostrate. Only to You do we turn and strive to gain deeds that bring us closer to You. We seek Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Indeed, Your punishment is reserved for the disbelievers.
