Meaning and Importance of the “Asā An Yahdiyani Rabbī” Prayer
This important prayer, found in Kehf (Cave) Surah verse 24, allows us to turn to Allah to seek the best and most correct course in all our endeavors. This supplication expresses a person’s desire to find the right path and their seeking of refuge in their Lord. The Arabic recitation and meaning of the prayer are provided below.
Importance of Dua: What is Dua?
Dua (Supplication) is a servant’s acknowledgement of his powerlessness before Allah’s majesty, expressing love and respect while seeking His grace and assistance. Literally, it means “to call out, to invoke, to request, and to seek help.” It is generally a plea made from the lesser to the greater, from the lower to the higher. Making dua has been encouraged and praised in verses and hadith:
- “Fear Him and hope for His mercy.” (Surah A’raf, 7:56)
- “There is nothing more honorable before Allah than supplication.” (Tirmizi, Da’awat, 1; Ibn Majah, Dua, 1)

Recitation: “…Asā an yahdiyani rabbī li akrabe min hādhā raşadā.”
Meaning: “…May my Lord guide me to something more correct than this.” This prayer expresses a person’s plea to Allah for better guidance and finding the right path.
