The Danger of Heedlessness and the Capital of Life
Heedlessness (ghafla) is when a person becomes absorbed in the fleeting occupations of the world, forgetting the purpose of their creation, that Allah is watching them at every moment, and that death is an absolute reality. Geylânî Hazretleri addresses those intoxicated by worldly greed with a tremendous jolt, saying: "O sleepers, there is One who does not forget you and does not fall asleep. O fugitives, there is a Witness who does not turn away from you and is always with you." Those who amass wealth without thinking of death or the day they will be called to account will experience great loss and regret when the Angel of Death knocks at their door. The intelligent person is the one who prepares for the Hereafter "as if they will die tomorrow" and does not squander the capital of life in their hands.
The Power of Tawba and the Revival of the Qalb
The most definite and urgent way to escape heedlessness is true tawba (repentance). Tawba is not merely a dry word uttered by the tongue; it is a profound remorse felt in the depths of the qalb (the heart) and an unshakable decision never to return to those sins again. The truth that "Tawba is a power. It is considered the heart of every good deed" explains how tawba radically renews a person's spiritual life. A qalb moistened with tears and trembling with fear of Allah is cleansed of the stains of sin and becomes pure. Knocking at the door of Allah's mercy without delay after every mistake saves the believer from the snares of Satan and the captivity of the nafs (the lower self).
Preparing Through Contemplation of Death
Frequently contemplating death tempers the desire for the world in the qalb and destroys vain ambitions. A person should realize their own weakness through the truth that "You were created from a putrid drop of water" and replace arrogance with absolute humility. The servant who turns their entire being to Allah, weeps over past mistakes, and accumulates righteous deeds (salih amals) for the journey to the Hereafter is truly awakened. This blessed awakening enables one to be spiritually revived before dying and to pass into the eternal abode with a clear conscience and a pure face.
