What Does Remembrance, Scholar, and the Mentioned Mean? How is Dhikr Performed?

RECOMMENDED DAILY REMEMBRANCES
The list includes daily remembrances recommended in accordance with the sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), containing supplications that will refresh your heart and soothe your soul:
- Estağfirullah: To seek forgiveness from Allah.
- Lâ ilâhe illâllâhu vahdehû lâ şerîke lehû, lehül mülkü ve lehül hamdü ve hüve alâ külli şey’in kadîr: There is no god but Allah, He is alone, there is none like Him, sovereignty belongs to Him and praise belongs to Him, and He is powerful over all things.
- Sübhanallâhi ve bihamdihî sübhânallâhil azîm: We glorify Allah and praise Him. Allah is great.
- Allâhümme eınnî alâ zikrike ve şükrike ve hüsni ibâdetike: O Allah, help me to be sustained upon Your remembrance, gratitude, and excellent worship.
- Sübhânallâhi velhamdülillâhi velâ ilâhe illâllâhu vallâhu ekber, velâ havle velâ kuvvete illâ billâhil aliyyil azîm: We glorify Allah and praise Him. There is no god but Allah, Allah is the greatest, and there is no power or strength except in the Most High, the Magnificent God.
- Sübhânallâhi ve bihamdihî adede halkıhî ve rızâ nefsihî ve zinete arşihî ve midâde kelimâtihî: We glorify Allah and praise Him as much as His creation, as much as His pleased souls, as much as the splendor of His throne, and as many as His words.
- Sübhânallâhi ve bihamdihî: We glorify Allah and praise Him.
- Allâhümme Salli alâ Seyyidinâ ve Nebiyyinâ Muhammed: O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
What Does Remembrance Mean?
The word dhikr, derived from the root “ze-ke-ra,” linguistically means to keep in mind, memorize, ensure it remains in memory without forgetting, to know its worth, reward, praise, advice, and similar meanings.
In the Quran, it is used 290 times with meanings such as “to remember, to mention, to fulfill what is required while bringing it to mind, to reward, to praise, to offer thanks, to say Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), to make supplication and prayers, to tell stories, news, books, glory, honor, sermons, worship, to take a lesson, to see evidence, to believe, to obey, to serve, to recite, to pray, to receive revelation, and to guide.” Dhikr is keeping alive the existence of the Lord of the Worlds, His commands, and prohibitions.
Being Deprived of Remembrance
In Surah Taha, “Whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a difficult life” is explained as meanings such as denying Allah. Being distant from dhikr, being without a share, and being deprived are described as worldly and hereafter hardship.
Quranic Verses Related to Remembrance
- “…And We have revealed to you this of the remembrance that you may explain to mankind what has been sent down for them…” (An-Nahl, 44)
- “You can only warn with the reminder those who fear the Most Merciful based on unseen [guidance]…” (Yasin, 11)
- “…Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah!” (Az-Zumar, 22)
- “…Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book and establish prayer…” (Al-Ankabut, 45)
- “Remember Me, and I will remember you.” (Al-Baqarah, 152)
- “They remember Allah while standing, sitting, or lying on their sides…” (Ali Imran, 191)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not speak except with remembrance.”
How is Dhikr Performed?
Sufis have stated that the most advanced level of dhikr is when the heart is filled with love and reverence. Remembrance performed through prayer is a great honor in the sight of the Lord of the Worlds.
