The Dua Recited by Our Prophet (peace be upon him) When Visiting Baki Cemetery
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
Rasulullah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) towards the end of the nights he spent with Aisha, would go to Baki Cemetery and say:
Meaning: “Peace be upon you, inhabitants of the land of believers! You have finally met what was foretold for you. You have been postponed to a later date. We hope that we will soon join you. O Allah! Forgive those who lie in the graves of Baqi al-Gharqad!” (Muslim, Janaza 102. Also see Abu Dawud, Janaza 79; Nasa’i, Janaza 103; Ibn Majah, Janaza 36, Zuhd 36)
Dua Recommended to be Recited When Going to the Graveyard
Bureida (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught his companions, when they went to the graveyard, to say:
Recitation: “Assalamu alaikum ya ahli diyari min al-mu’mineen wa al-muslimin. Wa inna inshaallahu lahalikun. As’alullahu lana wa lakumu’l afiyah.”
Meaning: “Peace be upon you, O people of this land who are believers and Muslims! We hope that we will soon join you. I ask Allah to forgive us and you.” (Muslim, Janaza 104. Also see Nasa’i, Janaza 103; Ibn Majah, Janaza 36)
The Dua Recited by Our Prophet (peace be upon him) Facing the Graves
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:
Rasulullah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) visited some graves in Medina. He turned his face towards them and said:
Meaning: “Peace be upon you, O those who lie in these graves! May Allah forgive us and you. You have gone before us. We will follow you.” (Tirmidhi, Janaza 59)
