The Necessity and Importance of a Spiritual Mentor
In the Sufi path, it is almost impossible to free oneself from the traps of the ego and the deceptions of Satan alone. For a truth-seeker who desires to reach God, it is essential to connect with a perfect guide (spiritual doctor) who has overcome these difficult obstacles and possesses knowledge and wisdom. Abdülkadir Geylani states, “Run to the doorsteps of those whose hair has turned gray on the path of truth. Take what you need from them, then return to your cell,” emphasizing the importance of being educated by experienced and perfect people. Paths taken without guidance and direction often lead a person astray and into arrogance; for the rule ‘He who lacks a great leader follows Satan’ is one of the fundamental principles of Sufism.
Etiquette, Submission, and the Mirror of the Heart
The most important thing to consider in the presence of a perfect guide is complete etiquette and submission. The guide is like a spotless mirror that shows the disciple their mistakes. Geylani expresses this truth with the words, “I am a mirror for you; see yourself in me. Place me as a mirror in your heart.” The student who applies the prescriptions given by the spiritual doctor without questioning, and waits expectantly for grace in his presence with silence and etiquette, quickly attains perfection. Knowledge and wisdom are gained from the words and actions of these great personalities. The disciple’s submission to his guide without accusation or objection allows his soul to be freed from its ailments.
The Guide as a Means to Union with God
A true guide is someone who calls the disciple not to himself, but directly to God (Truth). The principle ‘Be with those who deliver you from the servants and lead you to Truth’ shows that the guide’s primary purpose is to remove obstacles between the servant and God (love of the world, ego). The guide is an ambassador, a representative, and by God’s permission, a means of imparting truth. Those who join his gathering are cleansed of worldly ambitions, put on the armor of piety, and ultimately dive safely into the ocean of divine nearness and union (reaching God) under the guidance of the guide.
