The Need for Spiritual Guidance
In the Sufi path (seyr-i sülûk), which is full of the insidious traps of the ego and the deceptions of Satan, a person relying solely on their own intellect and information read in books often leads to disaster. Abdülkadir Geylânî (q.s.) emphasizes that connecting with a perfect guide who has the Quran and Sunnah as his guide is essential for this challenging journey. The guide is a spiritual doctor; he diagnoses his disciple’s ego-related illnesses and offers the most appropriate healing prescription. Geylânî, who said, “He who relies on his own opinion perishes. He becomes humiliated. His foot slips on the straight path,” draws attention to how pride and self-satisfaction deprive a person of guidance.
Adab and Submission in the Presence of the Guide
The first condition for benefiting from the discourse and spiritual grace of a perfect guide is absolute adab (respect) and submission. The disciple must set aside his personal objections and doubts like “why” and “how.” The rule, “Be well-mannered towards your teacher; let your silent state be more than your words. This state is more beneficial for what you will learn,” demonstrates the power of silence and good opinion in receiving spiritual knowledge. Geylânî (q.s.) says, “I am a mirror to you; see me as such. Place me in your heart as a mirror… Then you will see many things,” indicating that the guide is actually a transparent means by which the disciple cleanses his inner world.
The Key to Reaching Truth (Haqq)
The guide does not train the disciple to make him a slave, but rather to directly connect him with Allah. The sâlik who submits their being to their guide’s training is freed from the domination of the ego and desires thanks to that guide. The guide takes the disciple by the hand and brings him before Truth (Haqq), saying, “Here you are; here is your Lord!” However, a person who does not respect the guide, resents his warnings, and behaves with bad adab in his presence is doomed to leave without even a single drop from that blessed source.
