Not Objecting to Fate and Predestination
Human reason, with its limitations, is incapable of comprehending the hidden wisdom (secret) behind events in the universe, misfortunes that befall us, or sudden changes. This inadequacy of reason often opens the door to rebellion, and the servant begins to ask, “Why me? Why did this happen?” Hazrat Geylani summarizes the greatest courtesy to be exhibited in divine presence as follows: “There should be no words like ‘why’ and ‘how’. There is no opposition or dispute. There must be obedience and affirmation… Say that the command realm is complete. Say that there is no error in fate.” Judging the actions of the Exalted Creator with a limited intellect is the greatest impudence towards His infinite wisdom.
The Inquestionability of the Creator
A believer should know that he is obligated to fulfill his responsibilities under all circumstances, but that Allah has absolute freedom to do whatever He wills. The verse “He is not accountable for anything, but they are accountable for their actions” (Al-Anbiya, 23) is the clearest rule engraved in the hearts of those who travel the path of Allah. Struggling in the sea of fate and wasting time asking “How will it happen?” darkens the heart and leads the servant to failure. Those who surrender completely to the manifestation of wisdom and power with perfect tranquility and know how to be silent are honored to witness the divine beauties that objectors cannot see.
