The Need Dua Taught by Our Prophet (PBUH)

A Story Related to Osman bin Affân (RA)
Once, a person frequently visited Osman bin Affân (may Allah be pleased with him) to express his need but Hz. Osman (RA) did not show the necessary attention. This saddened the person. Later, this person met Osman bin Huneyf (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained about the situation.
Dua to Recite for Need
Osman bin Huneyf (RA) advised this person:
- “Perform ablution and go to the mosque and pray two rak’ahs.”
- “After the prayer, recite the following dua:”
«Allahumma, I turn to You seeking Your mercy through the most noble of prophets, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). O Muhammad! I turn to my Lord regarding this need, using you as a means, and Allahumma, make him my intercessor!» and then state your need.”
Following this advice, the person immediately reached Osman bin Affân (RA)’s door. The gatekeeper let him in, took him to Hz. Osman (RA), and had him sit on a cushion there. Hz. Osman (RA) asked:
“What is your need?” The person stated his need. Hz. Osman (RA) immediately fulfilled the request and said:
“I never thought you might have a need like this. If you have a need in the future, come to us.” The person whose need was met left the presence of the Caliph and then went to Osman bin Huneyf (RA), saying:
“May Allah reward you with goodness; until you spoke to the Caliph, he did not see my need and did not pay attention to me.” Osman bin Huneyf (RA) was surprised by this statement and replied:
“By Allah, I did not speak to the Caliph. However, I witnessed a story narrated by a scholar: A person who was blind came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said:
«O Messenger of Allah! Please supplicate to Allah so that He may remove the disease in my eye! It is very difficult for me to be blind!»
Hacet (Need) Dua
Our Prophet sallallahu aleyhi wa sellem said to the blind person:
“If you wish, be patient; it will be more beneficial for you.” The blind man said:
«O Messenger of Allah! I have no one to take me and guide me. This condition is very difficult for me. Please remove the disease from my eyes!» Then the Prophet sallallahu aleyhi wa sellem, our Master (PBUH), said:
“Bring a basin and perform ablution! Then pray two rak’ahs! After that recite:
Arabic Text of the Need Dua:
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ وَأَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّ الرَّحْمَةِ
يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي تَوَجَّهُ بِكَ إِلَى رَبِّي فِي حَاجَتِي هٰذِهِ لِتُقْضَى لِيَ
اَللّٰهُمَّ فَشَفِّعْهُ فِيَّ
Turkish Pronunciation of the Need Dua:
“Allahümme innî es’elüke ve eteveccehü ileyke bi-Nebiyyike Muhammedin Nebiyyirrahme, yâ Muhammed innî teveccehtü bike ilâ Rabbî fî hâcetî-hâzihî, li tûkde liye Allahümme fe şeffi’hü fiyye”
Meaning of the Need Dua:
“Allahumma! I turn to You seeking Your mercy through the most noble of prophets, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). O Muhammad! I turn to my Lord regarding this need, using you as a means, and Allahumma, make him my intercessor!”
After teaching this dua, the blind person immediately came to our Prophet (PBUH) and was completely healed.
When reciting this dua, it is more appropriate to say “Yâ Resûlâllah!” instead of “Yâ Muhammed.” This way we better express our respect for the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet’s (PBUH) explicit use of his noble names in this narration is a special permission and mercy to that companion.
