Our Prophet (sallallahu aleyhi ve sellem) advised his companions to recite this supplication in the mornings to wake up early. This dua is intended to seek Allah’s help, both for staying awake and avoiding heedlessness.
Early Morning Wake-Up Dua (Text and Recitation)
The hadith states:
“Whoever sleeps at night reciting:
لاَ تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلاَ نَوْمٌۜ، «اَللّٰهُمَّ سَهِّرْ عَيْنِي وَنَوِّرْ قَلْبِي وَادْفَعْ عَنِّيِ كَثْرَةَ النَّوْمِ وَغِلْظَةَ الْغَفْلَةِ»
Bismillâhirrahmânirrahîm. Lâ te’huzühû sinetün velâ nevmün. Allâ-hümme sehhir aynî ve nevvir kalbî ve’dfa‘ ‘annî kesraten nevmi wa ğılzate’l gafleti.
“In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. He whom slumber does not overtake, nor sleep! O Allah, keep my eyes awake and illuminate my heart, and remove from me excessive sleep and the heaviness of heedlessness!” and intends to wake up early, he will, with Allah’s permission, awaken at the desired time. Upon waking, he should immediately perform ablution and begin his worship.” (See Heysemi, X, 178)
Meaning and Virtues of the Dua
The meaning of this dua is to recite it with the intention of seeking wakefulness from Allah, requesting light for the heart, and distancing oneself from heedlessness. It helps those who rise early to be more productive in their lives.
