The Meaning and Significance of the Prayer “Rabbenā Afrig Aleyna Sabran”
At the heart of this prayer lies a servant’s acknowledgement of helplessness before Allah’s majesty, seeking His help with love and respect. The word “Duʿā” (prayer) carries meanings such as “to call out,” “to desire,” and “to seek assistance,” generally expressing supplication from the lower to the higher realm. Praying is a highly encouraged act of worship in the Qur’an and ḥadīth. Taking refuge in Allah and seeking His help is a requirement of faith.
“Pray with fear and hope.” (Al-Aʿrāf, 7/56) and “There is nothing more honorable before Allah than prayer.” (Tirmidhi, Adab, 1; Ibn Majah, Dua, 1) are just a few ḥadīth that demonstrate the value and importance of prayer.
