Rabbena Atina Dua: Its Meaning, Recitation, and Virtues
Dua (supplication) is the servant's confession of his own incapacity in the face of Allah's greatness, and, within feelings of love and reverence, it is the request for His grace and help. The word itself contains the meanings of "calling, addressing, requesting, and seeking help." In verses (āyāt) and hadiths, making dua has been praised and encouraged. Allah (the Exalted) says: “Call upon Him in fear and aspiration.” (al-Aʿrāf, 7/56). The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is nothing more noble in the sight of Allah than supplication.” (Tirmidhī, Daʿawāt, 1; Ibn Mājah, Dua, 1)
During the final sitting in prayers, after Allahumma Salli and Allahumma Barik, the Rabbena supplications are recited. Reciting these supplications is sunnah; if one does not recite them, the prayer is not invalidated.
“RABBENA ATINA FID-DUNYA HASANATAN…” SUPPLICATION AND ITS MEANING
Sūrat al-Baqara: Verse (āya) 201
Recitation: “...Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār.”
Meaning: “...Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire!”

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) Would Often Supplicate as Follows
“Allāhumma ātinā fi’d-dunyā ḥasana wa fi’l-ākhirati ḥasana wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār:” O Allah! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire! In the narration of Muslim, the following addition is found:
When Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite only one supplication, he would recite this one. When he would recite several supplications, he would include this among them. (Muslim, Dhikr 26)
