What Does “Rabbena ve lekel hamd” Mean?

During congregational prayers in the Hanafi school, when rising from rukūʿ, it is sunnah to say “Rabbena lekel hamd,” “Rabbena ve lekel hamd,” “Alahumme rabbena lekel hamd,” or “Rabbena lekel hamd hamden kesiran tayyiben mubareken fihi.”

Recitation: “Rabbena ve lekel hamd. Hamden kesiran tayyiben mubareken fih.” Meaning: “Our Lord, praise is Yours. Abundant, pure, and blessed praises are for Allah!”

Rifāʿa bin Rāfiʻ az-Zurqī (r.a.) narrates:

“One day, we were praying behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he raised his head from rukūʿ, he said, سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ (Allah hears those who praise Him). Someone among those praying said, رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked after the prayer:

“Who said this praise?”

He replied, “It was I, O Messenger of Allah!”

Thereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Allah, I saw over thirty angels competing to write it down [and present it] before the Presence of the Truthful One.” (Bukhari, Azan, 126)

In another narration, this praise is:

“All praise be to Allah with a pure and continuous praise, free from showing off and seeking attention, constantly increasing, always and abundant.”
