The Abyss Brought About by Trusting the Intellect
One of the most dangerous traps set by Satan in a person’s spiritual journey (seyr-i sülûk) is convincing them that their own intellect and knowledge are sufficient. Regarding those who, filled with pride, do not consult a knowledgeable individual, Geylânî Hazretleri gives this definitive judgment: “He who is satisfied with his own opinion perishes. He becomes humiliated. His foot slips on the straight path. Whoever likes his own opinion is deprived of guidance.” The person who deceives themselves by superficial information gained from books and claims they do not need the guidance of Sufi masters is like a foolish captain setting sail into the ocean without a compass. The truth, “There is no scholar who does not need another scholar, who does not want to increase his knowledge,” shows that even the greatest scholars are in need of spiritual training and consultation.
The Vital Need for a Guide (Murshid)
Just as it is extremely dangerous for a person with failing eyesight to walk alone on a difficult and treacherous path, it is equally dangerous for a person to journey alone against the deceptions of their own ego. “Your sight is failing; seek someone to guide you on the path. One who sets out without guidance may be rolled into a pit.” The first thing required for a seeker of truth is to find a perfect murshid (guide) who will teach them what they do not know, break down their pride, and show them the door to God. When that great soul is present, the student must abandon objection and adhere to the principle of “Accept whatever he says. View his opinions positively.” The person who considers their own limited perspective superior to the experience of friends of God is doomed to get lost on rough roads and remain in darkness.
