Subḥane Rabbika: Virtues and Recitation Time – Quranic Exegesis & Hadith

In the Asr prayer recited after the Tasbih, Subḥāne Rabbike rabbil izzeti amma yesifun; wa salām ‘alā al-mursalīn; wal ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi al-‘ālamīn (Surah Saffat, verses 180-181-182) is recited, followed by the recitation of Al-Fātiha.

The meanings of these valuable verses are as follows:

• Verse 180: The One Who possesses all majesty and honor is Allah, far removed from and exalted above everything that His creation attributes to Him with imperfection!
• Verse 181: Peace be upon the messengers sent by Allah!
• Verse 182: All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a Hadith narrated through Ibn Abi Hatim from Sha’bi:

“Whoever desires that his reward may be measured completely on the Day of Resurrection, let him say when he departs from his assembly: ‘Subḥāne Rabbike rabbil izzeti amma yesifūn – wa salām ‘alā al-mursalīn – wal ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi al-‘ālamīn’ (Saffat, 37/180-182).” (Qurtubi, Al-Jami’ li Ahkām Al-Qur’an, 15/141.
