The Surah That Drives Away the Devil
What surah did Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommend that, when recited, drives away the devil from the home? What are the virtues of this surah?
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Do not turn your homes into graves. Indeed, the devil flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Muslim, Musafirun 212)
Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah brings healing to marital discord and drives away the devil from the home.
Virtues of Surah Al-Baqarah
There are many authentic hadiths that explain the value and qualities of Surah Al-Baqarah:
“Do not turn your homes (by not reading the Quran) into graves. The devil is frightened and flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Muslim, “Musafirun”, 212)
“Read the Quran; for it will intercede on behalf of its reciter on the Day of Resurrection.”
“Two luminous scrolls, namely Surahs Al-Baqarah and Al-Imran, may come on the Day of Resurrection as two great clouds or canopies or flocks of birds, defending and protecting those who recite them.”
“Recite Surah Al-Baqarah; for possessing it is a blessing, abandoning it is regret and remorse, and sorcerers cannot overpower it” (Muslim, “Musafirun”, 252). “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah every night, these two verses are sufficient for him – that night.” (Bukhari, “Faza’il”, 10).
Story of Surah Al-Baqarah
One night, the companion Usaid ibn Hudayr was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah near a pile of dates when his camel became startled and agitated several times. When he stopped reading so that his child would not be harmed, he saw a ceiling illuminated with lights above his head (in the sky). This ceiling extended into the depths of the heavens. In the morning, he told the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about the matter, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “They were angels who came to listen to it. If you had continued reading, they would have been seen by everyone in the morning, and they would not have concealed themselves from the people” (Muslim, “Musafirun”, 242).
About Surah Al-Baqarah
It takes its name from the story in verses 67-71. This story relates how Allah Almighty commanded the Children of Israel to slaughter a cow (baqarah) through Prophet Musa and how they postponed this command with various excuses.
It is the second surah in the Mus’haf, the 87th in order of revelation, and was revealed in Medina. It is the longest surah in the Quran. While it does not have a specific reason for its entire revelation, many of its verses do have special reasons for their descent. Information about the reasons for the revelation will be given when these verses are explained.
