The Surah That Repels Satan
Our Prophet (peace be upon him) cautioned us not to turn our homes into graveyards. He said: “Indeed, Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Muslim, Musafirīn 212) This hadith demonstrates the importance and blessings of reciting Surah Al-Baqarah.
The Virtue of Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah
There are many authentic hadiths that describe the value and virtues of Surah Al-Baqarah. This surah is a means to eliminate unrest in the home, nullify the influence of Satan, and bring blessings.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Do not turn your homes into graveyards by neglecting the remembrance of Allah through reciting the Quran. Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Muslim, “Musafirīn”, 212)
Another hadith states: “Recite the Qur’an; for it will intercede for its reader on the Day of Resurrection. Recite two lights, that is, Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Ali ‘Imran; for they come forth on the Day of Resurrection as two great clouds or a canopy or the like, shading those who recite them. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah; for possessing it is blessing, abandoning it is regret and disappointment, and sorcerers cannot overcome its power.” (Muslim, “Musafirīn”, 252). Furthermore, “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, these two verses are sufficient for him for that night” (Bukhari, “Faza’il”, 10).
The companion Usaid ibn Hudayr was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah near a pile of dates one night when his camel became startled. When he stopped reading to prevent something from happening to his child, he saw a ceiling illuminated with lights above his head. He told the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about this, and he said: “Those were angels coming to listen. If you had continued reciting, you would have seen them in the morning, and they would not have concealed themselves from people.” (Muslim, “Musafirīn”, 242).
About Surah Al-Baqarah
Surah Al-Baqarah derives its name from the story in verses 67-71. These verses relate Allah’s command to the Children of Israel through Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) to slaughter a cow, and their attempts to postpone this commandment with various excuses.
It is the second surah in the Mus’haf and the 87th in order of revelation, having been revealed in Medina. It is the longest surah in the Qur’an. There are special reasons for the revelation of many verses within Surah Al-Baqarah. The surah addresses numerous important topics such as the fundamental principles of Islam, acts of worship, hypocrites, proofs of Allah’s oneness, the creation and destiny of humankind.
