This prayer, performed by Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri and known to many, is said to have been accepted by scholars (ulema) and saints (evliya). Reports indicate that those devoted to this path do not drown at sea and that many will pass away near the end of their lives. Here’s the accepted prayer of Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri…
The Understanding Between Sultan Ahmed Han and Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri
Sultan Ahmed Han held great respect for Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri and was generous towards him. One day, while conversing in the palace, when Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri wished to perform ablution (wudu), the Sultan himself brought the basin and jug and poured the water for his ablution. The Valide Sultan (Sultan’s mother) had also prepared a towel.
The Valide Sultan thought to herself:
“If I could witness a miracle of Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri!”
The Miracle of Hüdai Hazretleri
Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri, aware of the Valide Sultan’s thoughts, responded with these words:
“How surprising! Some people seek miracles from us. But is there a greater miracle than the Caliph of the Earth pouring water into our hands and the respected mother preparing a towel for us?”
The Intercession of Seyyid Abdülkâdir Geylânî Hazretleri
During the conversation, the Sultan asked for his opinion on the authenticity of the accounts stating that Seyyid Abdülkâdir Geylânî Hazretleri would intercede on behalf of his followers and repentant believers on the Day of Judgment.
After a moment of contemplation, Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri said:
“Yes, it is true! Seyyid Abdülkâdir Geylânî Hazretleri will intercede for many sinners among his followers!”
The Prayer of Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri
Then, the Sultan posed this question:
“My esteemed master! Do you also have a promise and good news for us?”
Upon this, Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Hazretleri raised his hands and made the following supplication:
“O Lord! Those who are on our path until the Day of Judgment, those who love us, and those who come to our tomb once in their lifetime and recite a Fatiha for our soul – they are ours… May those who belong to us not drown at sea; may they not experience poverty at the end of their lives; may they not die without correcting their faith; may they know when they will die and announce it, and may their death not be by drowning!”
(It has been reported that this prayer was accepted, those devoted to this path do not drown at sea, and many will pass away near the end of their lives.)
The Passing of Sultan Ahmed Han
Ahmed Han fell ill in 1617 (H.1026) and developed a wound on his back. The Mâbeynci Mustafa heard Sultan Ahmed Han say “Ve aleyküm selâm!” four times to some people who did not appear before him the day before his passing.
When asked about the reason, Sultan Ahmed Han replied:
“At that moment, Hazrat-i Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Hazrat-i Umar, Hazrat-i Osman, and Hazrat-i Ali came to me. They said to me: ‘You have gathered the sultanate of this world and the hereafter within yourself. Tomorrow you will be with Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him)!’”
Indeed, the next day, the life of this worldly and otherworldy sultan came to an end.
