What is the Adhan? How to Recite the Adhan and Fajr Adhan
In dictionary terms, Adhan means to announce, publicize, call out, or declare. As a religious term, it signifies announcing and declaring the time for obligatory prayers with specific words and in a unique manner.
HOW TO RECITE THE ADHAN? ARABIC AND TURKISH PRONUNCIATION AND MEANING
The wording of the Adhan is as follows:
- Allâhü ekber, Allâhü ekber (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest).
- Allâhü ekber, Allâhü ekber (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest).
- Eşhedü en lâ ilâhe illallâh (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah).
- Eşhedü en lâ ilâhe illallâh (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah).
- Eşhedü enne Muhammeden Resûlullah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).
- Eşhedü enne Muhammeden Resûlullah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).
- Hayye ‘ale’s-salâh, hayye ‘ale’s-salâh (Come to prayer, come to prayer).
- Hayye ‘alel-felâh, hayye ‘alel-felâh (Come to salvation/success, come to salvation/success).
- Allâhü ekber, Allâhü ekber (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest).
- Lâ ilâhe illallâh (There is no god but Allah).

How to Recite the Fajr Adhan?
In the Fajr (dawn) adhan, after “hayye ‘alel-felâh,” the phrase “Es-salâtü hayrun-minen-nevm” (Prayer is better than sleep) is repeated twice.
How to Recite the Iqama?
The “Iqama” is similar to the Adhan; it differs only in that after the phrase “hayye ‘ale’l-felâh,” the phrase “Kad kâmeti’s-salâh” (The prayer has begun) is recited twice.

How was the First Adhan Called?
After the Hijrah (migration) to Medina, when the construction of Masjid al-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque) was completed and congregational prayers began regularly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) consulted with his companions about how to announce prayer times. As a result, through revelation, the form of today’s Adhan was taught in dreams to as many as twenty companions.
The Adhan has become a symbol of Islam and is considered a confirmed Sunnah (practice of the Prophet). Through the Adhan, people are announced about prayer times, and also about Allah’s greatness, the Prophet’s being His Messenger, and the importance of prayer for salvation.
What is the Significance of the Adhan?
The Adhan is one of the most important symbols of our religion. It expresses a Muslim’s identity and strengthens their sense of belonging. As a declaration of freedom, the Adhan is a call inviting believers to obey Allah, awareness, vigilance, and piety.
The Adhan itself is an invitation, guidance. From Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) until today, it calls humanity to servitude to Allah.
The Adhan is a call to the one God, the merciful Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), to avoid evil and the monotony of life, and to salvation (peace and happiness).
HOW TO RECITE THE ADHAN SUPPLICATION? ARABIC AND TURKISH PRONUNCIATION AND MEANING
When a person hears the Adhan, they should recite:
Recitation: “Allâhümme Rabbe hâzihid-da’vetittâmmeh, ves-salâtil-kâimeh, âti Muhammedenil-vesîlete vel-fadîlete veb’ashü makâmen mahmûdenil-lezî va’adteh.”
Meaning: “O Lord of this complete call and the established prayer! Grant Muhammad the means and excellence, and raise him to the praised station that You promised him.” (Bukhari, Adhan, 8; Abu Dawud, Salat, 28) – *Note: This is a supplication for Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), not a direct translation of the adhan itself.*

Therefore, a Muslim should join the muezzin when hearing the Adhan, repeat his words, and when hearing the phrases “hayye ‘ales-salah” and “hayye ‘alel-felah,” they should say “lâ havle wa lâ kuvvete illâ billâh (there is no power or strength except with Allah),” and after the Adhan ends, the above supplication should be recited.
One should not speak, play music, or give greetings while the Adhan is being recited, nor even recite the Quran. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When you hear the Adhan, say what the muezzin says.” (Bukhari, Adhan, 7)
The Noble Qur’an characterizes those who show disrespect to the Adhan as being ignorant (Surah Al-Ma’idah).
