The Illusion of Hiding Discord with Skill
Many people on the Sufi path believe they can deceive others by correcting their outward appearance, donning a pious guise with prayer beads in hand and a cloak on their back, and being considered righteous. The ordinary, common folk may be deceived by this gilded exterior. However, Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani (q.s.) warns these hypocrites whose inside is different from their outside, shaking them: “You may hide it from ignorant people. But how will you conceal it from those with knowledge and experience?” A perfect guide whose heart-sight has been opened instantly diagnoses the hypocrisy, ostentation, and hidden worldly desires within a person.
The Assayman’s Gaze that Separates Gold from Copper
A true friend of God looks at the essence of souls, not their forms. Shaykh al-Geylani explains his keen vision, granted by his own spiritual station, as if with the eye of an assayman: “The assayman is not ignorant; nothing about one’s state remains hidden from him. Especially to those possessing the power given by Divine knowledge, nothing remains hidden.” False gold may deceive a naive person, but the moment it touches the touchstone of a skilled assayman, its falsity is revealed. Perfect saints observe the rotten intentions within a person “like black spots on a white sheet, seeing everything with all its subtlety.” Therefore, attempting *taqiyya* (appearing to be something one is not) in their presence is the greatest foolishness.
Secrets That Cannot Be Hidden from the Creator
The hypocrite who cannot deceive his guide is forgetting that he is trying to deceive the true Creator. Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani (q.s.), in a warning stating, “Woe, you are retreating behind the curtain so that servants may not see you. But you do not see the Creator,” exposes how foolish this deception truly is. A believer must tear off the false cloak of piety worn to gain the praise of the people and wash away all impurities within with tears and sincere repentance. Hearts that are one inside and out, shining like pure gold before the assayman, also attain eternal value in the Divine presence.
