The Impurities Left in the Heart by the World
Human beings become so engrossed in the world’s transient anxieties, endless ambitions, and desires that, over time, a layer of spiritual rust covers their hearts. This rust prevents one from seeing Truth, hearing divine counsel, and reflecting on the afterlife. Abdülkadir Geylânî (q.s.) announces the sole cure for this relentless disease of the heart with a hadith of our Prophet (peace be upon him): “Hearts are certainly prone to impurity and rust; their polish is reciting the Quran.” The divine verses of the Holy Quran are a rain of light descending upon hearts that have become rusted and hardened. That light cleanses the inner world and restores the heart to a place of Divine manifestation.
Clinging to Two Just Witnesses
For the heart to remain pure and for actions to be cleansed from Satanic desires, the servant must absolutely obtain approval from the Book and Sunnah in every step. “Find two witnesses for everything you eat and drink; one is the Book, and the other is the Sunnah.” The person who seeks spirituality solely through desires, fabricated rituals, or spurious means is led into heresy. The heart only revives by strictly adhering to the commands of the Quran and firmly clinging to the pure Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The “garment of religion” soiled by rebellious sins can only be washed with tears and sincere repentance and polished with that sacred polish.
