In Our Article, You Can Read the Supplication Made by Dhūn-Nūn al-Miṣrī, One of the Early Sufis.
Dhūn-Nūn al-Miṣrī—raḥmatullāhi ʿalayh—would supplicate as follows:
THE SUPPLICATION OF DHŪN-NŪN AL-MIṢRĪ
“Power is Yours, abundance is from You. You are the One who helps each of Your creatures with Your strength and might. You do as You will. Incapacity and ignorance can never befall You. Deficiency and excess cannot lay a trap for You. How could they, when You created them as well? They are Your creation; while You existed with all Your proofs, they were not. There is none besides You who can bring creatures into existence. How exalted is the station of the One whose every comprehended thing is His creation, and every created being is the work of His artistry. In this world, eyes cannot comprehend Him. No place can be independent of Him. None but You can truly know You. They can only affirm Your oneness (tawḥid—the oneness of God). None but one whose maʿrifa (gnosis, experiential knowledge of God) is deficient can be unaware of You. Nothing can make You forget another. No one can set a limit to Your power. Nowhere can be without You. No state can distract You from another.
O Allah, make our eyes tearful and our hearts full of heedfulness! Raise our hearts, in fear of You, to the gates of the heavens. Open for our eyes a door of maʿrifa (gnosis, experiential knowledge of God) and basīra (insight)! Grant our maʿrifas the understanding to contemplate the light of wisdom, O beloved of the hearts of lovers and the ultimate destination of hearts!
O Allah, You are near to Your friends (awliyāʾ). You suffice for those who rely upon You (tawakkul). You are aware of their hearts and secrets. My secret is manifest to You. I long for You. When sin distances me from You, Your dhikr (remembrance of God) envelops me. I know that all affairs are in Your hand. The source of affairs is Your decree and destiny. Who is more suited to abasement and deficiency than I? For You created me weak. Who is more worthy of Your pardon than I? You knew this beforehand. Your command has encompassed me. I have obeyed Your command by Your permission. For this, I am indebted to You. You know that I have fallen into disobedience; You have proof against me. I ask of You what Your mercy requires; that I present my need only to You, that You forgive my outward and inward sins, and that You make me independent of all things through Yourself.”
