The Calamity of Leaving Action Aside
In Islamic ethics, knowledge (ilm) is not merely a dry burden to be carried in the mind, but rather a light that brings one closer to Allah and beautifies one’s character. The person who acquires knowledge but does not act upon it has killed the soul of knowledge, contenting themselves with only its husk. Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani states, “How much longer will you study knowledge and forget action? Shorten your book of knowledge and begin to open your book of action,” strongly reminding us that a knowledge without application brings nothing but sin. A scholar who preaches to people but does not apply those truths in his own life will suffer great disappointment in the Hereafter.
Harmonizing Knowledge with Sincerity
For acquired religious knowledge to be beneficial, action must necessarily be crowned with sincerity (ikhlas). Every act of worship performed without intention and sincerity is like a bodyless soul or a treeless tree. The warning, “If the tree of knowledge had borne fruit, you would not rush to the palaces of kings,” clearly demonstrates that true knowledge should instill humility, contentment, and fear of Allah in a person. A person who acquires knowledge for worldly benefit, fame, or position has sold their own Hereafter and declared their spiritual bankruptcy. The true scholar is one who learns knowledge for Allah’s sake, sees his own shortcomings, and bows with deep reverence to his Lord.
The Wisdom Gained by the One Who Acts
When a person acts sincerely according to what they know, Allah opens the doors of secrets that they do not know. The warning, “Once for the ignorant… seven times for the scholar…,” indicates how severe the punishment is for those who know but do not act; while it gives good news that those who know and apply will be elevated to the rank of angels. The righteous servant who digests every truth he learns and reflects it in his life draws from springs of wisdom. Knowledge becomes his guide, action his steed, and sincerity his companion, so that the servant reaches the pleasure of Allah without straying from the straight path.
